Eartha Kitt Eats

You send the best of this country off to be shot and maimed. They rebel in the street. They will take pot and they will get high. They don’t want to go to school because they’re going to be snatched off from their mothers to be shot in Vietnam. Vietnam is the main reason we are having trouble with the youth of America. It is a war without explanation or reason- Eartha Kitt 1968

Their lips,
the clank of a fork hitting the floor,
in a silent room.
I am the scalding tea poured into locked jaws,
the snout snubbed with donut powder,
the pecker pecking petulance,
the mandible unable to hinge the awkward air
skimming through teeth,
with the scent of the first lady's’ tears.
I am the 1968 day’s shadow, casted upon the pristine white house.
I am the mascara that runs
around the president’s most cherished windows.
I am not the napkins smeared with disbelief.
I am not the licked clean plate.
I am the murky glass of water,
the leaders of this country ignore,
                             until it has spilled.
