On the first day of February
I’ll water the peonies that line
the steps to my house.
They shiver and wither
from the claws of the wind
out in the open, in the pool
of the sunlight.
Would they dry out?
burn from the glaring sun
or rot in the rain
until they sag?
I’ll save the peonies
water them until the last
day of January.
